Promise Land Sunday School

Imagine you are eight years old, on your way into church for Sunday school, expecting a drab classroom with tables and chairs, and a teacher who will read from the Bible and then lecture about the lesson. Instead, you are greeted by a welcoming entrance into the middle of an ancient marketplace with a cart of vegetables, baskets and striped awnings. You walk down a hallway transformed into a Biblical countryside; hills dotted with sheep, tiny villages, a lakeside. Can you see it?

A coral reef passageway leads under the sea. You are surrounded by blue water and fishes peeking around clumps of seaweed. A whale swims beside you and as you look up, you notice the underside of a boat. You stroke shells on the wall – you pick up a fishing net and notice its heft. Can you feel it?

Jesus taught through vivid stories, engaging His listeners’ emotions, memories, and senses. He used repetition, drama, and surprise. He used loaves and fish, bread and wine. This wonderful atmosphere for learning is what we are trying to achieve in our Promise Land Sunday School. Our kindergarten through 5th grade children hear, see, feel, taste, and smell Bible stories. The Rotation model of teaching we use, teaches a story over 4-6 weeks with varied activities engaging many learning styles. This multidimensional teaching leads to greater participation, retention, and understanding.

“These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the read, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on you hands and bind them on you foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” Deuteronomy 6:6-9

We are excited to kick off another year of Children Worship and Wonder. All children ages 3 years old through fourth grade are invited to participate in their own worship experiences. In Worship and Wonder (age 3-1st grade) and Following Jesus (2nd-4th grade), children will be given opportunities to worship God in uniquely meaningful and developmentally appropriate ways.

If your child would like to participate in these programs, bring him or her to worship with you.  At the designated time in worship, the children will be invited to the chancel steps for a children’s moment.  After that, the children will be taken to the Worship and Wonder and Following Jesus centers.  At the end of worship you may pick your child up in the Garden Room (age 3-1st grade) or the Tabernacle Room (2nd-4th grade).

We have a truly awesome team of people that have been trained and who consider themselves lucky to lead this ministry. They have each committed to pray daily for each child in Children Worship and Wonder and Following Jesus.

I hope you will be a part of what we are doing at First Christian Church. There are many things you can get involved in, but nothing is more important than guiding children into a relationship with Christ and helping them to develop a love for Him.

There is a also nursery available during worship services and special events.

Youth Group happens on Sunday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30. Together, we learn about God and what it means to be a community of faith through playing games, learning about the bible, and having meaningful conversations about the world around us. With guidance from the youth director and our Youth Leadership Council, we work together to make a place where there is a spot at the table (or couch or basketball court, etc.) for everyone.
Over the summer, youth go to church camp at Camp KBY. Our Disciples camping program has camps for both middle and high schoolers where students can meet other disciples from the Western Kentucky region. Additionally, the region also plans mission trips, ski trips, and other retreats for youth throughout the year.
